Youth Alive Zimbabwe is a Non-profit organisation which empowers young people with life skills and Sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR) information. We strive to help individuals develop holistically into responsible and confident members of society. Our interventions go beyond being educational and informative. They are experiential, empowering and transforming. Project clients go through a process which enables them to gain essential life skills and adopt values which respect human life and dignity.
We envision an HIV free generation in Zimbabwe, where young people fulfil their dreams and ambitions in life with respect for human dignity.
To address attitudes, values and behaviour in order to develop young people of integrity, service and good character; people who understand their purpose in life and lead exemplary lives in a bid to curb the further spread of HIV.
Youth Alive projects are being implemented in Manicaland Province. Mutare Urban and Mutare Rural being the main districts, although coverage extends through out the Province.
Our target group are young people and young adults aged 7-35. This group comprises youths in formal schools, youths out-of-school and adults working with youths. These project clients come from diverse socio-economic backgrounds and religious persuassions.
The Graphs below show typical annual out reach numbers for in-school and out-of-school youths.
Each year we reach out to a total of over 8 000 project clients in communities, primary and secondary schools, churches, colleges and tertiary institutions.
Young Zimbabweans aged 15-24 face several sexual reproductive health (SRH) related challenges. The most widespread are those of teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. These problems have been attributed to low levels of comprehensive knowledge about SRH rights including knowing and practising related life skills (ZDHS 2010-2011). As a result, young people continue to practise risky sexual behaviour, causing new HIV infections.
Our interventions seek to address the root cause of these challenges in an age appropriate, participatory, practical and youth friendly manner. We help project clients to look at their present situation and draw out unique solutions.
Age appropriate life skills and SRH education increases the chance of delaying sexual debut, reduce the frequency of risky sexual activity and the number of sexual partners.
By giving young people the opportunity to receive correct information, learn how to live by their values, and acquire relationship skills we are enabling them to make the right choices and become responsible and respectful adults.
